Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Manali to Kaza (The Grand Entry)
Start early morning from Manali. You will cross the Atal Tunnel or Rohtang Pass, entering the Lahaul Valley. The drive gets rugged as you cross Batal and tackle the mighty Kunzum Pass (15,000 ft). The terrain shifts from green mountains to cold desert. Arrive in Kaza by late evening. Check into your backpacker hostel or homestay and meet fellow travelers.
Day 2
Kaza Local: Key & Chicham
After breakfast, head out to explore the wonders of Kaza. Visit the 11th-century Key Monastery, a stunning architectural marvel built on a hill. Spend time interacting with the monks. Later, visit the Chicham Bridge, suspended over a deep gorge, making it the highest bridge in Asia. Evening free to explore Kaza market and try local cafes.
Day 3
Hikkim, Komic & Langza
Hire a bike or jump into the group SUV to visit the highest motorable villages. Send a postcard from Hikkim (14,400 ft), drink tea at Komic (the highest village connected by a motorable road), and photograph the giant Buddha statue at Langza against the Chau Chau Kang Nilda peak. Keep an eye out for ancient marine fossils scattered in Langza.
Day 4
Pin Valley Excursion
Take a day trip to the stunning Pin Valley National Park, famous for its unique pink and purple mountain hues and the endangered Snow Leopard. Drive till Mudh Village, the last motorable point in the valley. The landscapes here are vastly different from the rest of Spiti. Enjoy lunch at a local dhaba in Mudh and return to Kaza by evening.
Day 5
Kaza to Chandratal Lake
Leave Kaza and drive back towards Kunzum Pass. Divert from the main road towards the mesmerizing Chandratal Lake. The 14km off-road track is thrilling. Hike the final stretch to reach the crescent-shaped blue lake. Spend hours admiring the changing colors of the water. Overnight stay in a backpacker camp near the lake.
Day 6
Chandratal to Manali
Wake up to a freezing but beautiful morning. Post breakfast, prepare for the bumpiest part of the journey through the famous Pagal Nala and Chhatru. Cross into the Kullu valley and notice the sudden burst of greenery. Arrive in Manali by evening. Celebrate the successful Spiti loop with your backpacker group.
Day 7
Pin Valley & Mudh Village Exploration
Drive into the enchanting Pin Valley National Park. Visit Mudh village, the last village of Pin Valley, known for snow leopards and ibex. Enjoy traditional Himachali homestay tea.
