Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Shimla to Kalpa via Narkanda
Start your winter expedition from Shimla. The roads might be snowy, so our 4x4 vehicles will ensure a safe journey. Drive past the snow-draped trees of Narkanda and enter the Kinnaur valley. Arrive in Kalpa by evening. The Kinner Kailash peaks will be completely covered in a thick blanket of snow. Check into a heated room and enjoy a warm dinner.
Day 2
Kalpa to Kaza (The Frozen Drive)
Today, we drive into the true winter wonderland. The temperatures will drop significantly below zero as we cross Nako and Tabo. The Spiti river will be partially or completely frozen. This is an extreme adventure drive requiring great skill from our drivers. Arrive in Kaza by late evening. Your homestay will have a traditional tandoor (heater) to keep you warm.
Day 3
Key Monastery & Kibber Snow Leopards
Wake up in the frozen valley. After a hearty breakfast, drive to the iconic Key Monastery, which looks surreal surrounded by white snow. Later, visit Kibber village. Winter is the best time to spot the elusive Snow Leopard, as they descend to lower altitudes. Spend the day tracking wildlife with local guides and return to Kaza for the night.
Day 4
Langza, Hikkim & Komic (Whiteout)
Drive to the highest villages in the world. The Langza Buddha statue covered in snow makes for an incredible photography spot. If roads permit, we will drive to Hikkim to send a postcard from the highest post office, and Komic to experience life at 15,000 ft in sub-zero temperatures. Interact with the resilient locals over a cup of butter tea. Return to Kaza.
Day 5
Kaza to Kalpa (Return Journey)
Bid farewell to the frozen Middle Land and begin your return journey towards Kalpa. Enjoy the dramatic frozen landscapes once again. The drive will be slow and steady. Arrive in Kalpa by evening and celebrate the successful completion of the core Spiti Winter Expedition with a special dinner.
Day 6
Dhankar Monastery & Lake Trek
Visit the cliff-hanging Dhankar Monastery overlooking the confluence of Spiti and Pin rivers. Take a short 45-minute trek to the serene high-altitude Dhankar Lake. Overnight stay in Kaza.
